Cycling without rules - or protection - in Singapore

Cycling without rules - or protection - in Singapore
THE column ("True kings of the road"; July 15) may reinforce the stereotype of unruly cyclist who obeys no road rules.

My view as a motorist and cyclist is that sometimes some actions are unavoidable. For example, riding on pavement to avoid being hit by cars, or riding across pedestrian crossings to reduce exposure to danger.
If a cyclist really is the king of the road as the article claims, we should not find cyclists being forced onto the pavement. In fact, a cyclist is likelier to be a road orphan: He does not have a dedicated space on the road, no legal protection and when threatened by vehicular danger (by a car, lorry or bus), he must contort his ride in every which way to avoid being road kill.
The article does pose a valid, vital question, that is, whether the Government is unwilling to lay down the law clearly for cyclists and provide the necessary cycling lanes and other infrastructure that will engender orderly behaviour.
