Strive for a fairer way to compete
I DISAGREE with Dr Khor Swee Kheng ("Meritocracy is the only way to tackle inequality fairly"; Sept 13) and concur with Mrs Nurhidayah Hassan-Le Neel ("Address the problems of meritocracy"; Sept 10) that meritocracy, in reality, remains a limited system that benefits those who have an economic head start and cultural capital.

LYING FOR WORK PASSES
Don't blame it all on workers
THE report ('More caught for lying in work pass applications'; Feb 11) does not present a complete picture of workers who have been convicted of declaring false information and submitting fake education certificates to obtain an SPass or an employment pass.

Encourage gender equality and the babies will come

Encourage gender equality and the babies will come
LITTLE attention has been paid to the fact that greater gender equality will yield better results in reversing the declining birth rates ('More couples saying no to having kids', last Friday; and 'Why 'Stop at two' still makes sense to me', Sunday).

Let two small families share one maid
Let two small families share one maid

Letter from Gul Arora
This is with reference to the news of several maid agencies raising the salaries of Indonesian maids.
This is the age of small families with only one child. I myself am a single mother with an eight-year-old child. The question here is, do I really need a full-time maid? I do not - and yet, however, I do need someone's help to take my child to school, bring her back, and stay with her at home when I have to stay back late at the office.

Wrong to ban maids from condo pools
MY FAMILY and I live in Sarkies Gardens and recently, I received a letter from the management of the condominium informing us that maids would no longer be allowed to use the swimming pool.
