Aspiring to be middle class not the problem
MR HO Kwon Ping's commentary ('The silent revolution in my backyard'; Jan 19) traces the emergence of the middle class, and Singapore's move 'to ideologically co-opt the working class into adopting middle-class lifestyles and mentalities' so as to broaden the base.

Life after capitalism

Life after capitalism; By Robert Skidelsky
LONDON ― In 1995, I published a book called “The World After Communism.” Today, I wonder whether there will be a world after capitalism.
That question is not prompted by the worst economic slump since the 1930s. Capitalism has always had crises, and will go on having them.

Encourage gender equality and the babies will come
LITTLE attention has been paid to the fact that greater gender equality will yield better results in reversing the declining birth rates ('More couples saying no to having kids', last Friday; and 'Why 'Stop at two' still makes sense to me', Sunday).

Let two small families share one maid

Let two small families share one maid

Letter from Gul Arora
This is with reference to the news of several maid agencies raising the salaries of Indonesian maids.
This is the age of small families with only one child. I myself am a single mother with an eight-year-old child. The question here is, do I really need a full-time maid? I do not - and yet, however, I do need someone's help to take my child to school, bring her back, and stay with her at home when I have to stay back late at the office.

I NOTE that the Government's recent measures are aimed at putting an end to speculation and cooling the property market. I ask the authorities to also look into curbing the "condo raiders" who buy into old condominiums such as mine which have en bloc potential.

Do more for pedestrian safety
AS A pedestrian, I have observed that many drivers in Singapore expect pedestrians to give way to them. For example, when they are reversing or when they are driving out from a small lane into a main road, they expect pedestrians to wait and let them go first before crossing the road.
