Extend campaigning period
CAMPAIGNING is important in a general election because politicians would seek to reach out to their constituents and correspondingly canvass for votes on polling day.
Election campaigns serve a myriad of purposes.
A repository for relevant news of the day- for the purpose of personal record, reference as well as critical commentary.

SINGAPORE - As General Election fever heats up, two Desmonds - People's Action Party's (PAP) Desmond Choo as well as Singapore Democratic Alliance's (SDA) Desmond Lim - worked the ground yesterday in the respective constituencies that they are eyeing.
Hosting a block party for Hougang residents, PAP's Mr Choo said about three to four of every 10 households invited him into their homes for a chat.
"The feeling that I get is a very warm one," said Mr Choo, 32, who is second adviser to Hougang grassroots organisations.
"They are very open to sharing their issues with us and some even invited me over for dinner, so I think that is a very good sign."
Meanwhile, the SDA's Desmond Lim - who has expressed interest in contesting Punggol East - met residents at Rivervale Crescent.
Besides distributing pamphlets, Mr Lim also went on house visits.

Tackle agents seeking dual rental commissions
THE article by Ms Jessica Cheam last Saturday was timely ("When your agent does not act in your interest").
Although the Council for Estate Agencies (CEA) has banned dual representation, where the same agent cannot represent both buyer and seller, in a sales and purchase agreement, it has said nothing about a rental agreement.
Recently, I purchased a property with tenancy. There was no formal rental agreement between the previous owner and the tenants. When I asked the agent representing the previous owner if he could draft a rental agreement for me and the existing tenants, he boldly asked the tenants for a commission.

Need versus greed
Need versus greed
If greed dominates, economic growth will deplete the world's resources, driving us to a violent struggle for survival

India's great moral leader Mohandas Gandhi famously said that there is enough on Earth for everybody's need but not enough for everybody's greed. Today, Gandhi's insight is being put to the test as never before.
The world is hitting global limits in its use of resources. We are feeling the shocks each day in catastrophic floods, droughts and storms - and in the resulting surge in prices in the marketplace. Our fate now depends on whether we cooperate or fall victim to self-defeating greed.

WE NOTE with concern Mr Tan Thian Huat's letter ("Injured workers get little time to recuperate"; Feb 14).
In the past few years, the Humanitarian Organisation for Migration Economics and Transient Workers Count Too have assisted numerous workers in similar, if not more dire, circumstances. We have encountered a worker who was given only two days of medical leave despite suffering fractures to his knees; he actually needed months of medical attention. Another was given the same after a part of his finger was sliced off.

Make property tax more equitable
ACCORDING to Saturday's report ("Housing affordability of key concern"), the general sentiment is that the Government would be dishing out property, utility and service and conservancy rebates, upgrading old estates to increase the supply of HDB flats and providing larger housing grants for lower-income households in this year's Budget.
