MPS AT PARADE (One people, one dress code, please)

MPS AT PARADE (One people, one dress code, please)
Published on Aug 11, 2011
TUESDAY'S National Day Parade marked another evening of joyous celebration of Singapore's birthday.
Next year, I hope to see a tweak in the dress code of our Members of Parliament (MPs). MPs from the People's Action Party and the Workers' Party were dressed in their respective party colours of white and blue.
 This should change.
The National Day Parade is a celebration of citizens, united as one people, regardless of race, language or religion - and more so, political differences.
It should be a significant annual event uniting all political leaders to celebrate Singapore's birthday.
I hope future parades will see all MPs dressed in the national colours - a combination of red and white or the official orchid-patterned shirts and dresses.
MPs must make an effort to stand as one united people to serve the people of Singapore. They should take pride in their efforts to lead in nation building, and not show off their political party colours.
In future, community events organised and funded by the Government should also be free from the hint of promoting a political party.

BACKGROUND STORY
Change to a neutral hue
'I couldn't help but wonder why no MP turned up in red.'
MR ERIC ONG: 'I couldn't help but wonder why no MP turned up in red. Instead, they wore white or light blue tops. Surely they should be together as one with fellow citizens in celebration. A red top with a pair of white trousers or skirt would not go amiss in the sea of red we saw in the stands. All students attending National Day celebrations on the eve were encouraged to wear a red top to school. When we celebrate our 47th birthday, I hope our MPs will join us by wearing red for the parade.'
This is the spirit

'Patriotism first and politics second.'
MR TAN BUCK LIM: 'Yesterday's photograph (above) showed People's Action Party and Workers' Party MPs dressed in their political party colours. The National Day Parade is a time where patriotism comes first and politics second. The Singapore spirit should prevail. Hence, parliamentarians should don national colours (red and white) during this momentous event.'

Follow StarHub
'The message was clear: Celebration and not competition.'
MS CHERYL NG: 'I was impressed by an advertisement by StarHub congratulating Singapore on its 46th birthday. StarHub changed the colour of its logo from green to red and the message was clear: National Day was about celebration and not competition. In this spirit, can our MPs be dressed in red when attending the parade in future? It is not about white versus blue, but about one people, one nation, united by one colour.'
