NCMP scheme has no precedent either
I READ with interest Ms Indranee Rajah's response ('WP's fictional First World Parliament'; Tuesday) to the Workers' Party's (WP) vision of a First World Parliament which had no reference to any particular developed country.
A multi-party Parliament, despite its imperfections, is nevertheless a globally accepted mainstream ideal, a tenet of true democracy which encourages competition leading to progress.
The lack of a precedent shouldn't be used against the idea of a multi-party democracy. After all, Ms Indranee has also not named any specific country or successful model where the Non-Constituency MP scheme, other than Singapore's, which she promotes, has been known to be effective in improving the governance of a country.
