Team walkovers
'MPs must face the baptism of fire at some point in their political journey.'
MR GOH KEE CHUAN: 'Retiring Minister of State for Defence Koo Tsai Kee deserves recognition and respect for his patriotic contribution over 20 years to defence policies and service to the constituents
('MPs Koo Tsai Kee and Ong Ah Heng to retire'; March 30). Unfortunately, he did not win a single vote directly from any voter. A few other MPs may have more walkovers but they must face the baptism of fire at some point in their political journey. The current group representation constituency (GRC) scheme embodies good intentions, but is somewhat lacking in thoughtful implementation. It is also perceived as a convenient tool designed by the People's Action Party (PAP) to induct weak candidates, while the best candidates from alternative parties slog hard for every vote. The GRC scheme does not do justice to the PAP's track record. The PAP must take much bolder steps to rectify the disconnect, even if it means making the electoral battle more challenging for its own candidates.'
