Number of lawyers in Singapore could hit record 4,000 this year
Surge is due to changes to enable more to qualify, as well as SMU law grads
By K. C. Vijayan
The number of lawyers practising Singapore law here could hit a record 4,000 later this year as the impact of changes to enable more to qualify kicks in.
A second law school, started at Singapore Management University (SMU) in 2007, is also adding to the increase with its first batch of graduates this year.
Industry players said the market can absorb the increase because there has been a shortage of lawyers for many years relative to demand for them.
Wong Partnership's managing partner Rachel Eng, who noted the number had stayed at 3,500 for quite a few years, said 'the market can well absorb the increase, given the larger population and higher level of economic activity in the region'.
