PA to be applauded for sticking to its policy

PA to be applauded for sticking to its policy
Letter from Yee Jun Xian 04:46 AM Sep 05, 2011
I COMMEND the People's Association for assiduously ensuring that the grassroots organisations will continue to work closely with the Government.
When I first saw the angry retorts to the PA's explanation on why Opposition Members of Parliament cannot be grassroots advisers, I was bemused and a little disturbed.
Now, I applaud the PA for sticking with its policy despite the public pressure. It has to carry out the important task of connecting people with the Government, a process that cannot be compromised by having Opposition MPs as advisers.
Writers write. Teachers teach. Opposition MPs oppose. The logic is simple and irrefutable.
Opposition MPs are meant to be an alternative voice, but that voice should be restricted to Parliament. Otherwise, they have no other duty and, indeed, cannot be trusted with any other duty.
Perhaps certain members of the public are offended that their MPs, simply because they are from the Opposition, are not allowed to be advisers and represent their interests in the PA. But these people will have to live with their vote at the recent General Election.

It has become an unwritten truth, that if you bootlick (subtle then, now more obvious) the govt/ministers while in statutory boards, GLCs, civil service your career is likely to get an uplift.
This is not lost among many executives.
So unfortunately this is becoming an entrenched self-interest working towards the weakening of long-term strength and health of Singapore in mitigating groupthink weakness, meritocracy in opportunities, fairness, etc. This is not a good direction because of the pervasive impact of ruling party in almost all aspect of life in Singapore.
In an Internet, globalized world diversity, flexibility, optimization of individual unique talent in due time will differentiate the competitiveness of the nation.
Bootlicking is productive for the individual but counter-productive for the nation in the long run.

Once again another blind follower of PAP, or perhaps a propaganda, never consider the in-depth message of the government, PAP n the Elected President. What is the the message? Unifying Singaporeans. The writer is another faithful supporter of PAP never thinks before you pen your message. Let's not play what opposition or ruling party. Are we not Singaporeans whether you are PAP, Alternate Government or Opposition. Time to do your soul searching before you write.
