Becoming First World people
IT IS heartening to see the People's Action Party making changes to better meet the demands and aspirations of Singaporeans. It is also encouraging to see the Workers' Party's commitment not to oppose for the sake of opposing, and to act as a check on the Government to create a First World Parliament.
Having made all these demands on our politicians, have Singaporeans asked themselves what they bring to the table? What about becoming First World people?
Although it is not a hot-button issue, I hope to see it being debated in Parliament and concrete steps being taken to create a gracious country, through significantly increased funding for the relevant ministries to run public education programmes and improve enforcement.
Singaporeans can close ranks with their leaders by being gracious themselves, and gently reminding their relatives, colleagues and friends to do likewise.
Our crowded living environment would be a lot more bearable if we could significantly reduce inconsiderate behaviour such as littering, illegally modifying vehicles to make loud engine/exhaust noises, not giving up reserved seats, hanging out dripping wet laundry, talking loudly on mobile phones on buses and trains, misusing recycling bins, speeding, tailgating, road hogging and so on.
If we are successful in this aspect, then we can truly declare that we have achieved First World status.
