Spurring on eco-shoppers

Spurring on eco-shoppers
Letter from Teo Siyang 04:46 AM May 26, 2011
I APPLAUD Ms Barbara Tan for her suggestion in coming up with an alternative practice in reducing the usage of plastic bags in supermarkets ("Give eco-shoppers the green-carpet treatment", May 13).

Her idea of having a check-out counter to serve shoppers who use their own bags is similar to one of NTUC FairPrice's initiatives in 2009 at its City Square Mall outlet.
It was reported that this pilot project might be extended to other branches depending on public reception. I am curious to know whether this idea will be implemented eventually. Since 2007, FairPrice has come up with many efforts to promote environmentally friendly habits. I believe more could be achieved by continuing to refine its policies to eventually convert most of its shoppers to using their own reusable bags.
My observation is that most people are still heavily reliant on plastic bags.
As the biggest local supermarket chain, its efforts can spur other retailers to follow in its footsteps. Its cause will also not go unnoticed, as this will be a boost to its image, just as Ikea Singapore is known for being the first retailer to stop issuing free plastic bags.
